John Dewey (1859-1952) is one of the main proponents of pragmatism. Besides being a philosopher and psychologist, he was also a social and educational reformer. Art as Experience, first published in 1934, shows traces of all these dimensions of his work. Art is treated as experienced and as a specific formation of experience, relating back to our physical as well as our social and cultural situation. 

The seminar will be a close reading and discussion of large parts of the book. The students are asked to purchase a copy.
